Gordon Hookey

Gordon Hookey, Artist

Sit back with a good coffee and think about the day ahead ...

In Short ...

A member of the Waanyi people, local indigenous artist Gordon Hookey was a bricklayer before turning his attentions to art, but he credits his first trade with developing his sculptural skills. Gordon is known for his bold artworks that call for a vibrant colour palette, and his works examine the points where indigenous and non-indigenous cultures meet. For his latest project, Gordon developed Kangaroo Crew for the children’s centre as part of GOMA’s My Country, I Still Call Australia Home: Contemporary Art from Black Australia exhibition. The exhibition is the gallery’s largest presentation of indigenous art to date, and Gordon’s project presents a way for children and families to interact with the exhibition. Kangaroo Crew is based on Gordon’s own The Sacred Hill narrative that engages viewers through interactive mediums. The Weekend Edition caught up with Gordon to chat about his weekend rituals.

How do you like to start your weekend?
As an artist, I don’t have a nine-to-five job, so the concept of the weekend does not feature strongly in my life. When I do have a break, my weekend starts with Friday-night footy and a beer.

Sit back with a good coffee and think about the day ahead.

How do you like to unwind?
By going for walks in Brisbane’s magnificent parks with my sons.

What are your essentials for a well-spent weekend?
A well-spent couple of days is when I am able to have a sound unbroken sleep, plus a sleep in.

What’s something you’ve been meaning to do on the weekend but haven’t got around to yet?
Gardening.

Playing with my two little boys before they go to sleep.

Rugby League Week
magazine.

What inspires you?
My friends, family and all the selfless community people who give a lot without expecting anything back.

To own a Holden GTS.

What has been your greatest achievement?
Being consistent over 20 years of creating high-quality art from an Aboriginal point of reference.

What is success to you?
Being able to make a comfortable living from making art.

What are your words of wisdom?
