La Boite’s 2024 program unveiled – expect romantic dramas, Heartbreak-ing debuts and tinselled world premieres

As Brisbane’s home to emerging theatre for the last 99 years, La Boite Theatre’s yearly program always pushes the boundary with trailblazing content from emerging playwrights and cult-favourites. From modern classics to coming-of-age epics and world-first premieres – take your seats for another dazzling year of drama. La Boite Theatre’s 2024 program is here with a stellar season of unmissable productions.

Almost 30 years after its London debut, Patrick Marber’s contemporary classic Closer returns to La Boite with its study of love, lust and betrayal. Famously adapted for the screen in 2004, the stage play follows a quad of friends throughout the years as they navigate relationships, sexual politics and desire. Spearheaded by director Courtney Stewart, Closer’s dynamic and intimate take on modern love is set to open in April.

Once this theatre touchstone has kicked off the season, experience a taste of emerging theatre with the one-man play BlueThis debut work is helmed by Logie-winning actor and Netflix’s Heartbreak High-star, Thomas Weatherall. Blue follows the character of Mark and his relationship with his mother in this beautiful coming-of-age story. Both starring and written by Thomas, this new piece has been described as “very personal fiction” – set over one single and turbulent morning in Mark’s apartment. The play is coming to La Boite in May after its highly acclaimed run during Sydney Festival 2023.

Alongside these inter-personal epics, you can catch a biting-new satire on wellness from the mind of writer Dipika Guha – whose credits include TV comedy icons like Marvellous Mrs Maisel and Black Monday. Yoga Play deals with the tug-of-war between authenticity and enlightenment in today’s age and follows a floundering new yoga apparel CEO as she adapts to her new role and this complex industry. This international sensation is set to bring laugh-out-loud theatre and side-splitting social commentary to Brisbane this November.

For budding-little theatre-buffs, La Boite will be the host to the world premiere of Brisbane and craft icon Rachel Burke’s debut play Fancy Long Legs. This new play is an adaptation of Rachel’s upcoming children’s picture book which follows Fancy, a spider who loves to create webs but struggles to stay focused on her craft. The adorable arachnid sets off on a quest to find her own style and identity with the help of her friends in a wholesome new tale about neurodivergence. With set decoration led by Rachel herself, we can expect this to be a sparkling production of fun, joy and whimsy.

Feeling inspired? La Boite is also home to masterclasses led by arts industry experts to help develop industry-relevant skills from acting and directing to stage management and technical crafts. Sign up now to begin your immersion into this exciting world of theatre.
