Save the date: five events we’re looking forward to in 2019

Real talk – while 2018 may have been a great year for Brisbane, we’re even more excited for what 2019 is going to bring. Our cultural sphere just keeps getting better, with a host of local and international events taking place right here in our city. We’ve picked five killer events happening post-New Year that you should get tickets to before they disappear, lest you risk falling victim to some serious FOMO.

Yotam Ottolenghi: Ottolenghi Simple – Monday January 28 at Brisbane Powerhouse
Foodies, listen up – one of the most influential writers, restaurateurs and chefs is headed our way! Visiting Brisbane as part of the Writers and Ideas series at Brisbane Powerhouse, cult hero Yotam Ottolenghi will appear in conversation with Annabel Crabb to divulge some of his culinary secrets. His minimum-fuss, maximum-joy approach to food has made him a hit all around the world, and this is your chance to learn from him. With five best-selling cookbooks under his belt, this is one man with a whole lot of wisdom.

The Book of Mormon – From Saturday March 16 at QPAC
If you haven’t managed to catch massively hyped musical The Book of Mormon overseas or interstate, now is your chance – the multi award-winning production is finally coming to Brisbane! Equal parts irreverent and hilarious, this work of comedy genius comes from the minds of Trey Parker and Matt Stone of South Park notoriety. The charming and cheeky tale of Mormon missionaries travelling to Uganda has truly set the whole world alight, so don’t miss your chance – limited remaining tickets are on sale now.

John Mayer World Tour – Monday March 25 at Brisbane Entertainment Centre
When it comes to contemporary hit-makers, they don’t come much bigger than John Mayer. The certified crooner and absolutely prodigious guitar player is bringing his live show to Brisbane in 2019 as part of a massive world tour, playing hits from his extensive body of work. From the early days of ‘Your Body is a Wonderland’ right through to 2018’s smash-hit ‘New Light’, these concerts will feature no opening act – just pure, raw Mayer in his finest form.
Brisbane Art Design – From May 10–26 at Museum of Brisbane and various locations around Brisbane
Our city just keeps getting even cooler when it comes to the arts, and the announcement of Brisbane Art Design is further proof. This celebration of visual art will be taking over Brisbane’s parks, laneways, galleries, artists spaces and studios with work from our city’s brightest creative minds – both current locals and those who cut their teeth here. The Museum of Brisbane will be the event’s HQ, with the crowning glory being a major exhibition featuring established and emerging artists across a huge range of disciplines – from robotics to ceramics, the gang’s all here.

A Conversation on Narcos
– Friday July 26 at The Tivoli
True-crime nuts, this one’s for you – this is your chance to hear from the dynamic duo instrumental in the takedown of one of the greatest drug lords of all time. That’s right – US DEA agents Steve Murphy and Javier Pena are coming to Brisbane to chat all things Pablo Escobar, cocaine and the Cali hotel. This is the stuff you don’t get from Narcos, including exclusive real-life stories and images from the 1993 bust. It may not be until July, but we’d advise getting tickets ASAP – the previous Sydney and Melbourne tours sold out in a flash.
