Obie Award-winning theatre maker Young Jean Lee created quite a stir with her play Straight White Men when it debuted in 2014. The writer, director and filmmaker has been described as “one of the best experimental playwrights in America” by Time Out New York, and her enthralling play about the notion of white privilege is one of her most adventurous efforts to date. Since premiering, Straight White Men has gone on to tour more than thirty cities worldwide and is set to take over the stage at La Boite Theatre from July 27 to August 13.
The story revolves around the elderly widow Ed and his three middle-aged sons who have come home for the Christmas holiday. Amidst brotherly banter, childish pranks and Chinese food, each member of the family is dealing with the issue of identity and value as privileged straight white men. This examination of contemporary masculinity is a nuanced and engaging production that tackles the tricky issue its subject matter with care, with great performances from local talent including Roger Newcombe, Hugh Parker, Chris Pitman, Lucas Stibbard and Merlynn Tong.
