Pavement Whispers: Volume 67 April 12

From whispers of raindrop cakes in Brisbane to Botanica's second location, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Harajuku Gyoza raindrop cake
In last week’s issue of The Weekend Edition we posed a very serious question – are raindrop cakes the new dessert craze? After launching in Japan and then at Brooklyn’s Smorgasburg last week, we thought we’d have to wait a little while before they came to Australia. Well guess what? The wait is over. Harajuku Gyoza South Bank launched its own version of the raindrop cake at South Bank yesterday. Made from spring water and agar, giving it the appearance of a clear raindrop, the Harajuku Gyoza version can be scooped and eaten as a dessert with kuromitsu (brown sugar syrup) and kinako (roasted soy flour) mixed with sesame flour. The gyoza bar has also created a second strawberry-flavoured version with fresh strawberries, blueberries and raspberries inside, served with condensed milk, kinako and crushed peanuts. Oishii!

The Daily Edited pop-up
As if you needed another reason to head to James St marie claire Up Late this Thursday night – as well as designer appearances, street-wide shopping offers and pop-up bars, coveted online store The Daily Edited will be popping up in Brisbane for the very first time. The sleek leather accessories label is partnering with luxury eyewear retailer OnePointSevenFour for a one-night-only pop-up, allowing James Street shoppers to have their The Daily Edited leather goods personalised on the spot in-store. A curated selection of accessories including wallets, pouches and phone cases will also be available on the night. Look out for full James St marie claire Up Late details in The Weekend Edition this Thursday.

Crosstown Public House
After a six-month hiatus, Woolloongabba’s Crosstown Eating House has relaunched as Crosstown Public House. Hurrah! The revitalised venue is in more-than capable hands too – it has been brought back to life by Cam O’Brien, co-owner of 1889 Enoteca and owner of Sorellina Pizzeria. As its new name suggests, Crosstown Public House aims to bring back the concept of the true and honest Aussie pub, but will still hold on to some of the much-loved elements of the original Crosstown concept. Look out for full details on The Weekend Edition next week.

Botanica Real Food
Red Hill favourite Botanica Real Food has been teasing salad lovers of Brisbane for the past two months, announcing a second store but keeping its location hush hush. We’re excited to report that it will be setting up shop in Teneriffe at 29 Doggett Street, just near Dello Mano. Botanica Real Food Teneriffe is set to open in May, and you can expect to find all of your favourite 19 rotating salads, ready-to-go breakfasts and daily baked sweet treats. Keep an eye on The Weekend Edition for more details soon!

Morning After pop-up dinner
West End breakfast and lunch spot Morning After has announced its first pop-up dinner – Night Before – on Wednesday April 20. Starting at 6:30 pm, the dinner will include four courses, with dishes including pan-fried mackerel with buttermilk custard and micro salad, and confit duck with cherry glaze, pickled fennel and beetroot dust. With matching wines from South Australia and Greece, you might need coffee and dark sunglasses the morning after.
