Pavement Whispers: Volume 124 May 30

From whispers of open-air food hubs and new rooftop bars, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

X Cargo
Get excited friends – a new social hub is coming to Fortitude Valley and it goes by the name of X Cargo. Covering two expansive blocks on McLachlan Street, the predominantly open-air space will be a veritable playground, featuring a collection of distinct spaces using stacked shipping containers and purpose-built infrastructure. From 6:00 am, you’ll be able to soak up the sun and enjoy specialty coffee and topped toast from the cafe. As the day goes on, Eats Alley will feature multiple food stalls and rotating food trucks, plus there will be two permanent and a number of rotating pop-up bars each week – think frosé, cocktail and champagne bars. The party doesn’t end there – an outdoor garden bar will host live music, DJs, an outdoor cinema and more, and multiple rooftop terraces will provide killer views over The Valley and James Street. X Cargo will also feature function areas and rooms complete with integrated ordering technology, so orders are brought directly to you like a true baller. This social playground is due to open by August/September, with plans to open from 6:00 am to late seven days a week. We’ll have more details for you soon!

EI8HT
It’s a rite of passage for any newly 18-year-old to experience the pulsating atmosphere of The Family nightclub in The Valley, but after 16 years of good times the venue is choosing to shake things up with a new identity. EI8HT is the name of the new concept that is opening to the public on Saturday June 17, which will see the nightclub transform into a multi-faceted space with a host of new offerings. The biggest change is the arrival of Flaming Canary Rooftop Bar, which will feature an impressive outdoor terrace as well as the addition of the Flaming Canary Dance Bar underneath. EI8HT will host two unique nights every weekend including ONE on Saturday nights, which will showcase local and international performers across a range of genres including dance, burlesque, DJs, drag queens and visual artists, while Fluffy on Sunday will continue its weekly night of inclusivity on Sundays.

Pyro Project
If you are still stuck in the mindset that Toowoomba is only known for its flower festival, allow the team at Worldwide Hospitality Group to re-educate you. The group responsible for the likes of Junk and 2 Birds is gearing up to add another stellar addition to its portfolio in the form of Pyro Project – a concept that will be opening at the Walton Stores in Toowoomba in a couple of months. The restaurant will plate up succulent morsels of home-style protein, cooked wholly over fire that is fed with a range of hardwoods – that’s right, no gas! Patrons can take a seat around the chef’s table and watch the maestros at work as they prepare the old world-inspired dishes with modern techniques. As if that wasn’t enough to get you considering a trip up the range, WHG has also renovated The Office on Duggan Street, adding a new concept in the form of speakeasy-style haunt The Chelsea, which offers premium spirits, an extensive wine list, tapas and a killer atmosphere.

Eagles Nest Friday nights
If you like your TGIF drinks with a side of seriously stunning views, we have some great news for you – Eagles Nest at Kangaroo Point has announced that it will now be trading on Fridays from 3:00 pm! The prime party location was previously reserved for functions and only opened to the public on Sundays, but now the rooftop haven will be available to all on Friday nights to maximise those weekend vibes. Patrons can expect buzzing live entertainment paired with a killer tapas menu, with early birds being privy to special deals and some surprise freebies.
