The sweetest thing – The Cupcake Patisserie opens a brand-new treat haven in Albion

It’s hard to improve upon the culinary majesty that is the humble cake, but when it comes to pleasing all comers, we’re much more inclined to suggest that a box of cupcakes is a far better option. The exhilarating feeling we get from opening the lid on a box of freshly made treats is almost unparalleled, which is why we squealed in collective excitement when The Cupcake Patisserie opened a gorgeous cake store in Albion. Boasting a salivation-inducing selection of sugary delights, energising coffee, and a delightful space in which to snack, this pink-fronted nook is well worth a dessert detour.

For Amanda Scott and Aimee Wilcox, the latest iteration of their beloved sweet spot The Cupcake Patisserie arose from a desire for greener (or rather, pinker) pastures. Already known to many cupcake connoisseurs thanks to its long-running outlet at Westfield Chermside, Amanda and Aimee’s cakery concept had hit the limits of what was possible as a grab-and-go kiosk, necessitating an upgrade and evolution. The duo cast a wide net to find a spot that boasted space for production and retail, coming across their dream location on Sandgate Road in Albion. The street-side venue – formerly home to Two Tables Cafe – proved ideal, with a well-maintained kitchen and front-of-house space offering plenty of elbow room for Amanda and Aimee to produce their popular range from scratch, while also shaking up the menu with some new additions. The Cupcake Patisserie’s eye-catching pink-hued locale isn’t just for those seeking a sugary hit – it also doubles as a relaxed hangout spot where folks can linger for as long as they feel. A car park at the rear, comfy recycled furnishings, free WiFi and plenty of coffee at hand means that The Cupcake Patisserie is now much more than just a cake shop.

Unhindered by the space restrictions of their former home, Amanda and Aimee have upped the ante for The Cupcake Patisserie’s menu, which emphasises simple and traditional recipes imbued with modern touches. Eschewing pre-mix product, The Cupcake Patisserie’s various morsels are all made in house using local ingredients. The menu starts with the namesake – a monthly menu of cupcakes including a core range of six flavours and six seasonal or holiday-specific additions. The likes of white-choc raspberry, choc-mint slice, red velvet, rose and pistachio, fairy-floss unicorn and rocky road are just some of the flavours you can mix and match, but Aimee and Amanda have also bolstered the range of treats with cookies, slices and mini cake loaves (vegan and gluten-free cupcakes and slices will join the menu soon). Those seeking something larger to celebrate an occasion can order from The Cupcake Patisserie’s cake menu (boasting options such as chocolate cake dressed in buttercream, dark red-velvet cakes and vanilla sprinkle cakes with a pinata core filled with M&Ms), soon to expand to 40 kid-friendly and adults-only varieties available with custom lettering. Coffee from Melbourne’s Coffex Coffee Roasters is available for caffeine seekers, as well as decadent milkshakes for sippers with a sweet tooth. The Cupcake Patisserie offers same-day delivery for online orders and cupcake packs available via UberEats.
