Go with the flow – Spring Hill welcomes contemporary coffee spot The Flo

After undergoing a few months of refurbishment, the Spring Marketplace on the corner of Little Edward and Boundary Streets is showing signs of life. A new coffee nook has bloomed from the development’s fresh foundations, offering top-notch espresso pours, some tasty grab-and-go bites and bouquets of flowers to gift or spruce up your own living space. The Flo is now open, and is already proving to be an eye-catching addition to the local cafe scene.

The genesis of Fiona Liu’s new cafe The Flo started with a fierce love affair with coffee. After learning the trade over the past five years, Fiona accumulated enough knowledge of the process to strike out on her own, securing a corner location on one of the busiest intersections of Spring Hill. Intrigued with the idea of pairing sublime coffee with a floral twist, Fiona opened The Flo in late January – one part handy coffee joint and one part florist. The Flo’s aesthetic is best described as modern industrial, with a strong focus on concrete tones across bench tops, polished floors and walls (plus a smoky mirrored wall at the back). This stark palette is broken up by pops of colour from The Flo’s collection of chic tables and stools, as well as the abundance of fresh flowers on display and available for purchase.

As a die-hard coffee lover, Fiona was discerning when it came to The Flo’s roaster of choice. Brisbane’s own esteemed outfit Bellissimo Coffee was tabbed for its specialty beans, which is available across The Flo’s range of espresso-based pours. The cafe will be adding single origins and filter pours in the near future, while matcha, chai and beetroot cocoa lattes are already available. Non-coffee drinkers are also spoiled for choice when it comes to refreshing beverage options. Tea sippers will be stoked with The Flo’s selection of signature cold-brew fruit teas, which come in peach oolong, lemon black and green jasmine flavours, backed by a selection of iced fruit sodas, fresh seasonal juices and iced coffees. The Flo’s menu caters best for the grab-and-go customer base – those craving an express option for breakfast and lunch. A rotating selection of salads, chia-seed puddings, muesli and yoghurt pots, sandwiches and wraps are available alongside a host of pastries from Danny’s Bread. If you’ve got a bit more time on your hands, you can linger and snack on avocado smash or a brekkie brioche burger with egg, ham and salty cheese.
