Brisbane’s food scene is home to many hidden gems, but few eateries have earned as loyal a following as New Farm’s Japanese-inspired restaurant Yuzu & Co. The tiny restaurant has ensnared tastebuds with an inventive take on Japanese cuisine, and is now taking its fare to the masses with a sizeable sibling venue on Park Road in Milton. From sake and sushi to poke and popcorn shrimp, Yuzu & Co’s eye-popping selection of eats and drinks look to be a feast for the senses.

Kuldeep Singh’s experience with Japanese cuisine honed over the years through working at several esteemed Japanese restaurants, but an itch to shape the cuisine with some contemporary curves inspired the chef to open his own restaurant in 2017. Armed with his culinary nous and an eye for quirky flavour combos, Kuldeep launched New Farm eatery Yuzu & Co. The restaurant has endured and flourished into a popular dining spot thanks to a menu of Japanese cuisine with tasteful fusions, but due to restaurant’s space limitations Kuldeep found that room to experiment further was limited. In 2018 Kuldeep started sifting through other Brisbane suburbs for a suitable location to expand, striking pay dirt with a vacant restaurant tenancy on Park Road. The space – once home to Mediterranean restaurant Alegria – offered the perfect spot to inhabit, with earthy tones, a striking interior aesthetic, an operational kitchen and space for 60 seats suiting Kuldeep’s needs.

Yuzu & Co’s Milton menu features all of the winners that diners love at New Farm, but Kuldeep is tweaking the list to cater equally for Milton’s large lunch crowd. After experimenting with flavour combos with his Uber Eats concept Yuzu Poke Bar, Kuldeep has added bento boxes and several hot and cold poke bowls to the lunch menu. We’re talking bowls with chicken katsu curry, beef teriyaki, nasu dengaku, eel teriyaki and spicy tempura prawns. The rest of Yuzu & Co’s menu features a cross-pollination of ideas, with brie cheese tempura, sashimi tacos, gobo-root chips, soft-shell crab burgers just some of Kuldeep’s imaginative dishes. The Milton location also boasts a larger bar, allowing the restaurant to serve a wider selection of Japanese sake, beer and cider, wine and cocktails.

Yuzu & Co Milton is open now. To celebrate the opening, this weekend diners will be able to score 10-percent off their bill. Head to the Stumble Guide for more details.
