Salt Gypsy merges sustainability, sass and style for its swish surf gear

Sport in general tends to be a man’s world, which very much blows. As well as getting paid significantly less and often being shirked by the media in favour of their male counterparts, too often women in sport are represented as a less gritty, more pretty alternative. For example, in the world of surfing you’d be forgiven for thinking that the ladies are bound to bikinis, boardies and rashies, but there’s a player on the scene that’s offering a killer alternative. Salt Gypsy is pioneering a movement that celebrates female surf athleticism, diversity and style in equal measure, designed by those who walk the walk.

When you can’t get what you need, often the only solution is to do it yourself, which is exactly what Salt Gypsy founder Danielle Clayton did. After spending three seasons as a surf guide in the Maldives and hanging out in the tropics, she was inspired to create a platform that supported and showcased indie surfwear designers making stuff that she was into. Through research for her blog, a lack of product that suited her personal style and what she liked being financially out of reach, she took matters into her own hands and had some bespoke surf leggings made up. They absolutely blew up on account of other surfin’ gals being in a similar boat, and thus Salt Gypsy the label was born.

As well as being nice to look at and practical to boot, the Salt Gypsy offering has a major point of difference in its manufacturing process. Salt Gypsy surfwear is made from a regenerated nylon yarn called ECONYL – this recycled yarn is made from discarded ghost fishing nets, textiles, carpet offcuts and other plastic wastes mixed with Italian lycra, resulting a long-lasting and highly durable textile. As well as the iconic surf leggings, Salt Gypsy has a killer range of high-waisted surf bottoms, crops, turtleneck rashies and tanks in a variety of patterns and colour ways.

To live your best surf life, you can shop the Salt Gypsy collection online or take a roadtrip to Byron Bay and visit the Sea Bones store.
