Since launching Maison Iris van Herpen in Amsterdam almost two decades ago, Iris has emerged as one of fashion’s leading names. With a dual focus on science and nature, the Dutch fashion designer uses futuristic technologies to explore natural themes like marine biology and quantum physics in her work. In 2010, Maison Iris van Herpen introduced 3D-printed fabrication into its designs – a technique that has grown synonymous with the van Herpen brand. Even the unconverted will likely recognise Iris’ style from the red carpet looks of Beyonce, Björk, Cate Blanchett, Lady Gaga and Tilda Swinton.

QAGOMA’s upcoming exhibition traces the fashion house’s dynamic relationship with natural history, culture and technology. Anticipated to be a collision of art and fashion, the exhibition has been designed as an immersive sensory experience. Almost 100 garments will be coming to Brisbane alongside a curated range of contemporary artworks, specimens and cultural artefacts. Iris’ intricate creations, including garments, footwear and headpieces, will be exhibited with shadow projections by Canadian media artist Philip Beesley, an explosion drawing by Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang, documentary footage of blooms of phytoplankton and fungal networks by Yann Arthus Bertrand and Michael Pitiot and many more unexpected additions.

Calile Culture – the luxury hotel’s event series for leisure and learning – will be hosting QAGOMA curator Nina Miall in conversation with Conde Nast editorial director, Edwina McCann, to discuss the upcoming exhibition. The duo of Australian tastemakers will chat about the work of this provocative and pioneering  artist and the curation journey of this Brisbane-exclusive exhibition.
