Broken Hearts Burger Club
The evolution of Broken Hearts Burger Club from pandemic-inspired pastime to Brisbane burger superstar is undoubtedly one of 2020’s biggest success stories. That success is set to continue into 2021 as the crew behind the hugely popular American-style burger joint has announced the opening of not one, but two new Broken Hearts Burger Club stores this year. Northside locals will be blessed in late June with the arrival of a Broken Hearts outpost at Mango Hill Marketplace, while residents of Redlands will score a spot of their own at Victoria Point Shopping Centre in September. Both locations will be slightly bigger than Broken Hearts’ Morningside headquarters, but will offer the same menu of smashed-patty cheeseburgers, crispy fries and milkshakes for dine in, takeaway and delivery. Little Big House
Lovers of South Bank’s multi-level party spot Little Big House were crestfallen last year when the venue succumbed to the COVID-19 crunch, but spirits are set to lift now that the large Queenslander has been taken over by new operators. Brett Fitzpatrick (formerly the Fitz in Fitz & Potts) has taken on the site, giving it some new life with an aesthetic sprucing to go with a new menu and drinks offering. The venue has quietly reopened to the public, with newly appointed head chef Nick Stapleton (formerly of The Balfour Kitchen) devising a menu influenced and shaped by Asian flavours and French cooking techniques – think prawn toast, spanner crab and tomato salad, chicken katsu and kimchi fried rice. Little Big House’s bar team is matching the zesty fare with a host of tropical-inspired cocktails like the Little Big House G&T, watermelon mojitos and Passionfruit Pash. Harris Farm Markets
Here’s some great news for lovers of fresh produce and artisanal goods – Harris Farm Markets is opening its anticipated flagship Queensland store in West End on Friday June 4. Spread across an 1800-sqm space on the ground floor of the 1920s Peters Ice Cream Building at the heart of West Village, Harris Farm Markets West End will showcase a mind-boggling array of fresh produce and artisanal groceries. Shoppers can fill their cart with pour-your-own honey, milk from Maleny Dairy, Barambah Organics and Inside Out oak milk on tap, 500 kinds of fruit and vegetables (as well as a range of imperfect picks), a smorgasbord of plant-based products, more than 500 cheeses, cured and fermented smallgoods, seafood from a specialist fishmonger and a sweet treats from an on-site doughnut deli. Did you miss the news last week about Fortitude Valley’s forthcoming arrival of Latin American-inspired social club Hey Chica? If so, here are the need-to-know details. The Hallmark Group – the seasoned operator behind Retro’s Cocktail Lounge, Finn McCool’s Irish Pub and Caxton Street landmark Lefty’s Music Hall – is expanding its portfolio, taking over the Brunswick Street Mall site most recently home to Beirne Lane and converting it into a venue inspired by the vibrant culture of Cuba. We’ve been told to expect a menu shaped and inspired by Havana’s diverse street-food scene and a cocktail list boasting flavour-packed concoctions, as well as a roster of DJs responsible for keeping Hey Chica’s street-party vibes going all night long. In case the temperature displayed on your weather app didn’t clue you in, today is the first day of winter. To mark the occasion – and to celebrate the launch of its brand-new mobile app – Brisbane City cafe Botero House is giving away free coffee! Botero House will offer the first 1500 people that download the app via the App Store or on Google Play a free coffee to the value of $7. The Adelaide Street cafe is also launching its new winter menu today, which features mouth-watering morsels like panko-crumbed fried-chicken katsu sandos, tandoori fried chicken baos, truffle mushroom orecchiette and a classic carbonara – so there are multiple reasons to stop by! Additionally, this Sunday Botero House will host a collaborative pop-up event Any Given Sunday, where sommelier Kate Christensen and renowned chefs Mal Meiers and Tabitha Thomson will be serving a five-course long lunch consisting of snacks, two entrees, a main with a side and dessert.
