Hawthorne Road’s hospitality hub boasts everything from a boutique cinema and gourmet food market to some of Brisbane’s best fish and chips, and even a few lively dinner spots, but up until recently the busy strip has lacked a dedicated daytime eatery that suited pram-toting families and the younger brunch-hunting set alike. Daniel and Hannah Bowles of Miss Jones fame chose the suburb to follow up their acclaimed Brunswick Street nook, seizing the opportunity to bring their style of eye-catching warmth to the area and fill the apparent void in the process. The resulting diner – Sister – is a sun-soaked street-side cafe boasting an aesthetic of adorable illustrations, peach, lavender, white and timber, conjured and implemented by style-setting branding wizards Autumn Studio. The 45-seater’s namesake, its familial nature and colourful vibrancy pay homage to Daniel’s sister, who passed in 2008. Her fun and vibrant spirit is imbued in everything here, from Sister’s initial inspiration to the cafe’s outgoing energy and radiating positivity.
Much like the fare at Miss Jones, Sister’s menu emphasises freshness, colour and quirkiness – funnelling a myriad of culinary inspirations into an array of all-day breakfast dishes and lunch options. Sister’s day starters include some truly mouth-watering options – we’re talking breakfast gnocchi doused in mushroom ragu, bacon crumb, pecorino and a poached egg, gingerbread waffles lathered in cinnamon custard, honeycomb gelato and citrus meringue, and sticky Asian-style pork-belly benedict served on potato hash with greens and yuzu hollandaise. From 11:30 am onwards, the menu expands to serve karaage chicken rolls, cauliflower tacos with chipotle mayo and wagyu cheeseburgers. Single O has been tabbed for Sister’s coffee supplier, with the smooth and sweet Killerbee blend on offer alongside HRVST St cold-pressed juices, shakes, teas and hot chocolate.
